Yoga Etiquette

If you are new student to yoga, it can be quite bewildering to know what to do when you first enter the yoga studio. At The House of Yogi in San Diego, we understand the first step is the biggest one and have laid out some guidelines to ensure your yoga experience is a safe and welcoming one.

  • Please switch your cell phone off or to silent and Do Not bring onto studio floor with you to practice.
  • Show up on time. A wise master once said “Early is on time”.
  • Remove your shoes before entering the studio practice space.
  • If you need to change from street clothes into yoga gear, please use a dressing room instead of the rest room. Leave this free for people who need the bathroom.
  • Unfurl your mat quietly and set it up correctly. If you’re not sure, look around and see what other people have done. Be aware of the space that you take.
  • Take care not to step on other people’s mats.
  • Be mindful of personal hygiene. No excessive perfume or deodorant please.
  • Turn off all electronics before class. Bring only your mat, towel, hydration and props to the practice space.
  • Keep conversation to a minimum, keeping voices low, or stay silent altogether.
  • If needed, move your mat to make room for others in a full class. Kindness and compassion are encouraged.
  • If you absolutely need to leave before class is finished, especially in Savasana, inform your instructor before the start of class. Leave as quietly as you can, respecting those who have worked hard to get to this period of silence.
  • When class is finished, clean up your immediate area and neatly return props to where you found them.
Please practice mindfulness within the studio space. Gossip, complaining and bad attitudes are better left outside. Instead, please be thoughtful with your actions, talk with kindness and compassion, cultivate discipline and respect all who enter through these doors.

Namaste – I bow to the divine in you.

We currently have one beautiful restroom with three changing rooms. Due to water restrictions in drought stricken San Diego when we built the studio, we chose not to build showers.
Yoga mat, towel and hydration if needed. We do offer yoga mats and towels for rent or purchase, as a purified hydration station to fill up your water bottle.
No. We strongly urge you to bring just your mat, water bottle, towel and props if necessary with you onto the studio floor. This helps keep the space clear for the teacher to move around safely, and leaves you to concentrate on your yoga practice. Please remember to turn your cell phone to silent or switch off. Cell phones are NOT allowed onto the studio floor.
The House of Yogi believes in practicing safely. Our yoga classes are structured in a way to progress the new student in a safe and effective manner. For a more enjoyable experience, please feel comfortable with the Vinyasa Fundamental and/or All Levels Class before attending an Advanced Vinyasa class. If you are unsure, please check with the teacher or manager.
