Teacher Spotlight: Zoë Freedman

Zoë is a much-loved instructor at The House of Yogi. If you’ve met her, you understand why. Zoë is bubbly and extroverted; her zest for life is palpable, and quite contagious. You can feel her passion for yoga in each class – which are well planned and thoughtfully sequenced. Zoë has extensive classical ballet training and received her Bachelor of Arts in Dance from San Diego State University. She is a 200 RYT certified yoga instructor and also has a 60 hour Aerial Teacher Training certification. She teaches both vinyasa and restorative yoga at The House of Yogi, and also practices often in the studio.

Zoë, how would you describe your yoga philosophy?
My yoga philosophy is to make yoga work for your body. Yoga isn’t about being able to do a handstand or the splits; rather it’s a moving meditation focused on the breath to increase space in the body, and ultimately, the mind. Space that allows us to feel looser, less stressed and ultimately to tune in to what really matters. I want my students to leave class feeling better, lighter, more spacious and overall happier!

What do you like about teaching at The House of Yogi?
I love teaching at the House of Yogi for so many reasons! Firstly, I fell in love with the studio as a student, not a teacher. Even though I already was a teacher, I was just looking for a studio to grow and enhance my own practice. It was such fun getting to know the instructors and becoming friends with Shaun and Beth. So I guess what I’m saying is – THOY is a great community to be a part of, student OR teacher, and being an instructor there just adds a whole new, wonderful layer. The space is beautiful, the atmosphere is inviting, welcoming, and supportive!

What are a few examples of lessons you have learned from your students?
What I am CONSTANTLY learning from my students is how different all of our bodies are! I love to ask students how certain stretches or poses feel, which parts of their bodies are feeling the stretch, etc. The answers are sometimes very surprising and unexpected. From their responses, I can then figure out more modifications or variations to better serve everyone and everyBODY.

What are some of your favorite things?
One of my very favorite things is – traveling! I hope to one day be able to travel even more often than I do now. Some of my top bucket-list trips include Socotra, Borneo, Papua New Guinea and South Africa.

Anything else you would like to share?
Yes, I would also like to mention that I am happy to chat about yoga, traveling, aerial yoga or any other topic anyone wishes to discuss. My favorite part of teaching is getting to know my students, many of whom I’ve become friends with over the years. Travel-talk is a favorite so if that is a passion of yours I’d love to hear where you’ve been and where you hope to go!
